High-wheel bicycle racers riding toward the camera through downtown Frederick, Maryland

High-wheel bicycle racing through downtown Frederick, Maryland.

Each summer, the National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race brings antique and replica high-wheel bicycles to downtown Frederick. Riders race through the city while spectators line the streets around the course.

The event is hosted in partnership with the Frederick Department of Economic Development and Visit Frederick. Cyclists and spectators travel from around the country for a race unlike anything else on the summer calendar.

The approach: action and the city around it

Photographing the High Wheel Race means keeping up with a moving piece of history. Riders balance at impossible heights and glide past old brick facades as cheers echo through downtown. The race brings athleticism, nostalgia, and plenty of showmanship to the same street.

Between laps, I looked for details that place the race in Frederick: spectators pressed against the barricades, brick facades along the course, riders preparing, and the reactions that followed each finish.

The finished story

The High Wheel Race puts tradition, craftsmanship, competition, and a large crowd on the same downtown streets. The photographs need to show the scale of the race while holding onto the individual riders and spectators who give it character.

The collection moves from racing action to preparation, spectators, and the streets around the course. That mix shows both the competition and the experience of attending, giving an event story more to draw on than the finish alone.
