Customers and a member of the East African Coffee House team talking beneath the illuminated map of Africa

East African Coffee House was the first business to put one of my image libraries to work. A few photographs found a home on the website, and many more became part of the coffee house’s social presence.

The opportunity: show the whole coffee house

The collection needed to connect the space with what happens inside it: the drinks, the preparation, and the welcome at the counter. That range would give the business ways to introduce itself beyond a photograph of the room.

The illuminated map of Africa gives the room an immediate identity. Curved light follows the architecture, woven pendants warm the counter, and pale wood carries through the seating and service areas.

The photographs begin with that sense of place, then move closer. Branded cups, pastries, drinks, and the details behind the counter connect the room to what customers come there to experience.

The approach: place, people, and process

An interior can show how a business looks. People show how it feels.

Customers ordering, conversations beneath the map, and the team preparing drinks gave the collection movement and context. Those photographs let the coffee house show both the designed environment and the hospitality taking place inside it.

The result: website and social imagery

The useful result was not one hero image. It was the range of the collection. East African Coffee House selected photographs for its website and returned to the library repeatedly for social media.

That use shaped the way I approach commercial photography now. Space, people, product, and process work best as one connected story, photographed with enough variety to support more than a single post or campaign.
